Section titled “Expansion in Network of Trade and Urbanisation or Reasons for Increase in Trading Activity”- Agri surplus created social classes that demanded more consumables
- Religions like Buddhism and Jainism encouraged trading activities.
- Urbanisation increased consumption.
- The Han empire and the Roman empire increased the demands of goods.
- Mathura inscriptions mentions various categories of merchants viz Vanik → general trader, Sarthavaha→ leader of a caravan and Sresthin/setthi→ financier. It also mentions various occupations.
- Arthashastra and Jatakas mention about trade guilds and craftsmen.
- Ivory figurines have been found in Bagram in Afghanistan
Internal Trade
Section titled “Internal Trade”- Jatakas and Milindapanha provide information about trade.
- Coins, sealings, and seals provide additional information.
- Seals were made of stone, ivory, copper or lead. It was used as securing merchandise and indentification mark. ^eb5283
- ==Post Mauryan coins were cast in copper==. They have been found in Khokrakot in Rhotak, Sunet in Ludhiana, Taxila and Sanchi.

External Trade
Section titled “External Trade”- Details about maritime trade is given by Periplus of the Erythrean sea.
- It mentions that the 2 major ports were Barbaricum and Bharuch.
- The items of import were Brocades, corals, frankiscense(gum resin), glass vessles, money and wine.
Urban Centers

- Fortified sites have been indentified at many places including Taxila.
- Houses were well made with burnt bricks, beads were found at many places.
Role of Religion in Trade
Section titled “Role of Religion in Trade”- Mathura and Gandhara were major centers of Buddhism and they also developed as major centers of trade. Sanchi was another center.
- Buddhists Sanghas became rich due to donations and they themselves carry out donational activities.
- The rise of Mahayana buddhism resulted in an increase in demand for goods like incense, cloth etc for ritual observances.
